Elena Martín
Film director
Elena Martin is a screenwriter, actress, and film director. Born in Barcelona in 1992, Elena Martín is one of the most relevant voices of a generation of Catalan film makers who use audiovisual language to delicately and intimately address rarely explored subjects.
Her work has always been in between cinema and theatre, and in between acting and directing. She gained her reputation playing the lead role in the film Les Amigues de l’Àgata (2015), and three years later she signed her first project as a director with Júlia Ist (2017), in which she played a young woman who leaves Barcelona to study abroad on an Erasmus programme in Berlin. Creatura (2023) is her second full-length film which won a Gaudi award for best film and best director, and a Directors' Fortnight award as part of the Cannes Film Festival. Creatura addresses the taboo of feminine sexual awakening during childhood, as well as desire, the transformations of the body, and the responses of our environment to those transformations.
